Shade-Loving Urban Garden

This client had a spacious terrace that needed a planting refresh without blocking city views. The goal was a lush, country garden feel with seasonal color.

With limited sunlight, the design uses shade-tolerant perennials like Jacob’s Ladder, Solomon’s Seal, hellebores, and hosta, paired with shrubs such as camellia, andromeda, and rhododendron for staggered blooms. A magnolia espalier adds greenery along a wall without obstructing views, while mixed-tone planters create a space ideal for both entertaining and quiet mornings.
