Pride's Corner
Vernonia noveboracensis (New York Ironweed)
New York Ironweed is a bold, upright native perennial with sturdy stems and narrow, dark green foliage. In late summer, it puts on a vibrant display of deep purple, aster-like blooms that create a fluffy, cloud-like effect. A magnet for butterflies and other pollinators, its nectar- and pollen-rich flowers support a wide variety of beneficial insects.
This vigorous grower is both deer and disease resistant, thriving in full sun and adaptable to a range of soil types—though it performs best in moist, slightly acidic, rich soils. To prevent self-seeding, remove spent flower heads before seeds develop. For a more compact form, cut back stems to near ground level in late spring. Leave stems standing through winter to provide valuable habitat for overwintering insects.
